marathon mondays videoEvery Monday leading up to the race day, March 4, Newport News Now is featuring various One City Marathon participants and partners. We hope these spotlights bring you insights and personal perspectives on why people participate in the marathon and what it means to them. Whether it's running, volunteering, cheering or sponsoring, every participant in the One City Marathon is important.

Cassie Wilkinson is a One City Marathon Ambassador who works for the City of Newport News Engineering Permits office. Wilkinson has participated in the marathon each year of its existence and continues to show her support by participating again this year.

  1. How long have you been participating in the One City Marathon weekend and in what capacity (running, volunteering, etc)?
I have run the marathon all 3 years and plan on completing it again this year.  I have also participated in the Marathon Training group that is offered by Point 2.

  2. What is your favorite part of the One City Marathon weekend?
My favorite part of the event is seeing the community all along the course volunteering and cheering us on.  I also love the runner relaxation area that is available at the One City, One Celebration.  It’s a great spot to soothe those aching and tired muscles and it’s good for the spectators as well.

  3. What do you think the One City Marathon brings to the Community?
I think the marathon weekend brings a sense of unity to our community.  People from all walks of life are out along the course cheering on complete strangers.  Our volunteer and cheer stations are made up of all demographics from young girls who are aspiring to be runners themselves to church groups doing their part for community service.

  4. What is special about the One City Marathon course?
I would have to say that our course is an AWESOME course!  I have run races in several different states and I believe our weekend is the best event from beginning to end.  It is a well laid out course that showcases the majority of our City, packet pickup location is easy to get to and there are several race distances for all ages and events for the younger ages to participate in.
