At last night’s meeting, Newport News City Council did not

agree to delay the vote on two agenda items related to The Plaza at Jefferson as requested by the applicants. City Council proceeded with the public hearings as scheduled.
The first item was a request to change the City’s comprehensive land use plan designation for the 33 acres of airport property at the intersection of Jefferson Avenue and Brick Kiln Boulevard from Transportation, Natural Area/Open Space and Parks and Recreation to Community Commercial. After listening to citizens’ comments on the proposed change during the public hearing, City Council, with a 3-3 vote, did not approve the land use change.

City Council then opened the public hearing on the rezoning of the same property from M1 Light Industrial to C1 Retail Commercial to allow for the development of The Plaza at Jefferson, which is proposed to be anchored by a Wegmans grocery store. After the public hearing, during which numerous citizens expressed their opinions, City Council voted 4-2 to continue the public hearing until its June 14th meeting.
