On January 6, Downing-Gross Cultural Arts Center becomes the center stage for a multi-sensory art exhibit opening. A Space of Her Own is an effort to bring to the forefront the need for women’s representation in art and society. From 11 a.m. to 1 p.m. guests can come to paint a winter masterpiece in a fun workshop led by artists Alexandra Whiteside and Terri Ballinger. At noon, guests can join Danyelle Lassiter Saunders who will lead a one-hour masterclass infusing the dance techniques of The Dunham Technique, originating from Katherine Dunham known as the “matriarch and queen mother of black dance”, and West African dancing. During the evening, the Downing-Gross Newport News Community Gallery will come to life as female artists present their work and muses in imaginative and visceral ways at a special reception that begins at 6 p.m.
The purpose of this initiative is to create more collaborative artistic spaces that are accessible to everyone, especially women, while in turn paying homage to women artists from previous generations. Each artist participating in the exhibit has chosen a trailblazing female artist of a previous generation to act as their muse for a new piece that they have created. The exhibit itself is being displayed January 6 through January 27. Learn more by visiting the exhibit’s website http://aspaceofherown.weebly.com/.
