Learn A New Hobby With Newport News Public Libraries

If your plan for 2018 is to start a new hobby, Newport News Public Libraries have got you covered. Interested in starting a garden? Grissom Library is partnering with the Virginia Cooperative Extension for a series of gardening seminars  from January through April.  The Newport News Master Gardeners will present a seminar once a month covering topics such as spring gardening, container gardening, lawn care, and organic gardening.  The seminars are free, and open to all ages and all gardening levels. The first seminar is Tuesday, January 16 at 6:30 p.m.
sewingOn Thursday, January 18, at 6 p.m., Main Street Library is conducting an orientation for beginners interested in sewing with the Brother Sewing Machine. For two hours, learn and practice basic functions on the Brother NQ575-PRW sewing machine, including bobbin winding and loading, threading, and stitch selection.  Practice sewing various stitches on a fabric swatch and sewing fabric pieces together.  Upon completion of this course, participants will be qualified to use the library’s Brother sewing machine in the Creative Corner makerspace.  The session topics  also include makerspace policies, machine safety, introduction to machine sewing, and basic operation of the sewing machine.  Registration is required to attend and opens on January 4. 

Want to bring your drawings to life? Learn more about 3D printing at South Morrison Family Education Center on Thursday, January 25 at 3 p.m. The two hour workshop that provides an introduction to 3D printing, how it works and how it is used by the general public. An over?view of the Ultimaker 2 3D printer is used to demonstrate how digital drawings can be made into physical objects.
