More than just flag bearers
An honor guard serves as the "guardians of the colors" by displaying and escorting the national flag. They exhibit impeccable performance and exquisite uniform standards and truly appreciate the meaning of integrity and service. Most importantly, when called upon, the Honor Guard team serves as a tribute to sworn personnel who have made the ultimate sacrifice and are an important part of a fallen officer’s funeral.
“What I enjoy most and least [about being part of the honor guard] is perhaps the same thing. We were recently on a balcony of a church where services were held for one of the two State Troopers who died in a helicopter crash in Charlottesville. At the service’s end, the family of the deceased trooper, in tears, looked up at the balcony full of Color Guards from across the state and country. It was like we were a blanket of support for them. There was hardly a dry eye. It is not enjoyable to go to funerals of fallen officers, but it is an honor to participate in them. Again, I am part of the Honor Guard to let the families of the fallen know we care,” said Master Police Officer, William Zins, NNPD Honor Guard.
Newport News Police Department provides an Honor Guard to participate in department sponsored events, including the annual memorial service, academy graduations, and other community events as requested.
