Newport News Police Department Welcomes New Officers

12-13 police gradsLast Thursday, the Newport News Police Department held its17th Basic Law Enforcement Graduation and Swearing In Ceremony and welcomed 23 new officers to the department. The ceremony took place at the David Student Union on the campus of Christopher Newport University and included the Newport News Police Department’s Honor Guard and Pipe and Drum Band. Delegate Marcia Price from the 95th District of the Virginia House of Delegates was the guest speaker for the evening and officers were sworn in by the Honorable M. Scott Stein, Newport News General District Court Judge. Family members joined the graduates to pin the badges on the new officers.

The ceremony marked the end of nearly six months of rigorous training in both a classroom setting and practical scenarios. Following graduation, each new officer was assigned to a field training officer for additional training before being released on independent patrol. After field training, the officers will be assigned to one of the department’s three precincts.
