Newport News City Council tonight will consider a request to

delay the vote on rezoning 33 acres of airport property to allow for the development of The Plaza at Jefferson, which is proposed to be anchored by Wegmans grocery store.
In a letter sent to the City yesterday, attorneys for the airport cited the need for more time to address concerns raised by City Council at a work session on April 26th as the reason for the request to defer the vote. They have requested that the vote be delayed until City Council’s June 14th meeting.

The property is currently zoned M1 Light Industrial and is being proposed to be rezoned to C1 Retail Commercial to all for retail development. Public hearings on the rezoning and a related comprehensive plan amendment were scheduled for tonight’s City Council meeting
(agenda items E4 and E5), which starts at 7 PM in City Hall, 2400 Washington Avenue.
