One City Celebration Committee Hosts Annual Holiday Food Drive

Free events take place Dec. 13-18

The North District Holiday Food Drive Committee is hosting its 16th Annual One City CelebrationHoliday Food Drive December 13-18. Events take place at the Denbigh Community Center, with the exception of the gospel concert, and participants should bring nonperishable food items to take part in the activities. 12-6 one city

The six day event kickoffs the week with a free PETA-sponsored spay/neuter clinic on Wednesday, December 13. Citizens can bring pets 8 a.m. until noon to be spayed or neutered for free with a donation of nonperishable food items. The week continues with a job readiness seminar and job fair on Thursday, December 14 from 10 a.m. until 1 p.m. Job seekers should come prepared with resumes in hand to meet and interview with employers. To date, approximately 60 organizations have registered to attend the job fair.

Festivities continue at Denbigh Community Center Friday, December 15 at 6 p.m. Families can enjoy Community Day with movies, popcorn, and games.  Adults 21 and older may also enjoy an After Work Party at DCC from 7 p.m.- 9 p.m. with live music from the band Champagne. Attendees should also bring nonperishable food items to attend the Community Day event or the After Work Party. 

On Saturday, December 16, the committee is hosting the official Food Drive Party from 10 a.m. to 6 p.m. Citizens can drop off nonperishable goods, enjoy entertainment, free fitness demonstrations, and the Newport News Police Department K9 exhibit. Stylists from local barber and salon Tomorrow’s Image will be on site to give citizens of all ages a free haircut when they donate nonperishable food. 

Food collection continues on Sunday, December 17, at New Beech Grove Baptist Church. Citizens can bring food items to the church, located at 326 Tabbs Lane, and enjoy a free gospel concert at 4 p.m. The celebration officially ends Monday, December 18 with food being distributed . Newport News residents with a valid I.D. may come to Denbigh Community Center at 1 p.m. to receive a free food basket. Baskets are being limited to one person per household and are on a first come first serve basis. Citizens also have a chance to receive another free haircut from Tomorrow’s Image during the event.

Citizens can make monetary donations in lieu of nonperishable items. Because the Annual Food Drive is supported by Full Circle Foundation, a 501(c)3 non profit organization, all donations are tax deductible.  Monetary contributions should be made payable to Full Circle Foundation, P O Box 14037, Newport News, VA  23608.  For more information or to volunteer email or
