City Submits $30 Million Grant Application For Newport News Choice Neighborhood

Posted on December 5, 2017 at 9:55 AM by Communications Department

Grant would help implement a transformation plan currently being developed

Last year, the City of Newport News and the Newport News Redevelopment and Housing Authority received a $500,000 Choice Neighborhoods Initiative (CNI) Planning Grant from the U.S. Department of Housing and Urban Development (HUD) to help develop a plan to transform a portion of the Southeast Community. The Transformation Plan for the Marshall-Ridley area is being finalized and is due to HUD this month. In preparation for implementation of that plan, Newport News Redevelopment and Housing Authority, in collaboration with the City, Newport News Public Schools, Hampton Roads Community Action Program and dozens of other local partners took the next step in the transformation process. Incorporating community input, the team submitted an application for a $30 million CNI Implementation Grant. The grant, if successful, would build upon the planning process and toward implementation of the Transformation Plan.

CNI is HUD's signature place-based initiative to revitalize and transform distressed public and assisted housing and surrounding areas focusing on housing, people and neighborhood needs and opportunities. CNI Implementation Grants support those communities that have undergone a comprehensive local planning process and are ready to implement their plan.
