Trash Carts and Their Lids

Posted on May 9, 2016 at 4:36 PM by Communications Department

From time to time, residents may wonder why their trash5-10 trashtruck_SC carts weren’t collected. One of the main reasons a trash cart may not be collected is because the cart has been overfilled with trash and the cart lid is open. This creates a special problem because the mechanism on the truck that dumps the cart is an automated, hydraulically-powered mechanical arm that raises the cart up high and tilts it over the truck hopper, where the contents fall into the truck. The system is designed for the cart lid to stay closed until the cart is over the hopper. If the cart is overfilled, the lid is open too early and the contents of the trash fall to the ground. Carts are required to be placed at the curb with the lid fully closed in order to prevent trash from falling outside the truck hopper.

If your trash lid is cracked, broken or missing, you may request a replacement lid by contacting the City’s 311 Contact Center at 757-933-2311 or 311@nnva.gov.
