Libraries Invite Community to “Can Their Fines” and Help Feed the Hungry

Posted on November 16, 2017 at 9:41 AM by Communications Department

The Newport News Public Library strives to give back to the Newport News community through everything it offers – programming and classes, employment assistance, civic events, services, and even food drives. The library’s “Can Your Fines” Food Drive begins Monday, November 27, at all branch locations, and gives patrons the opportunity to pay off fines they have on their accounts and give back to the community. Instead of paying cash for overdue and late renewal fines during this period, patrons are able to “pay” with cans of nonperishable foods and some nonfood items. This does not apply to fees for damaged or lost library materials.

Benefiting the Foodbank of the Virginia Peninsula, the Food Drive is held annually between Thanksgiving and New Year’s. In the last two years, the Newport News Public Library System has collected more than 2,000 pounds of canned goods for those in need. Visit Can Your Fines 2017 Food Drive for more information and to view the Foodbank’s list of needed items.
