Through a variety of
magnet and specialty program options, Newport News Public Schools (NNPS) offers elementary, middle and high school students the chance to focus in such areas as environmental science, communication and performing arts, aviation, global studies, and math, science, technology and engineering. The deadline to apply to a magnet program for the 2018-2019 school year is January 5, 2018.
NNPS is hosting a series of open houses for students and their families to learn more about the programs.
Open houses are taking place throughout November, December, and early January. To apply for a program, families may request an application at any Newport News public school or at the NNPS Administration Building located at 12465 Warwick Boulevard, or families can apply online. School administration is encouraging families to submit applications online but paper applications can also be turn in the child's school, the NNPS Administration Building, or any school open house on or before the closing date.
Once applications are received applicants are assigned a random lottery number by the computer, and students will be selected based on these numbers. All applicants will be notified of program acceptance by mail after February 9, 2018. The deadline to decline placement is February 23, 2018. Visit the
NNPS website to learn more about the magnet programs, the acceptance process, and apply online.
