Taking steps to self-sufficiency

The Employment Services Unit of Newport News Human Services recently held a graduation ceremony for participants completing the Administrative Assistant Class. The class is part of the Virginia Initiative for Employment not Welfare (VIEW) program. Family and friends of the graduates as well as Department of Human Services staff members were present to celebrate this accomplishment. Keynote speaker Derek Jenkins, Director of Security and Emergency Management at Huntington Ingalls Industries, delivered an inspirational message challenging the graduates to propel in their prospective careers.
The VIEW program, administered by the Newport News Department of Human Services, promotes employment and work support to recipients of TANF (Temporary Assistance to Needy Families). The TANF program provides eligible families with a monthly cash payment to meet their basic needs. Virginia's TANF program emphasizes personal responsibility. The Department of Human Services Employment Services Unit provides a variety of supportive services such as assisted job search, child care, transportation, volunteer work opportunities, continuing education services and job readiness classes to help participants overcome employment barrier. The training class was facilitated by New Horizons Regional Education Center.
