2017 One City Marathon Charitable Partnership Program

Posted on May 9, 2016 at 9:04 AM by Communications Department

Just as the exciting memories from the 2nd Annual Newport News charitychecks_SCOne City Marathon weekend are still fresh, it is time to start thinking about 2017! Registration for the March 12, 2017 races is already open, and now the City of Newport News is ready to designate official beneficiaries for the coming year.

The One City Marathon has raised over $40,000 for local non-profits in just two years, making the event one of the most charitable races of its size! For 2017, the Charitable Partnership process is starting early to allow for more opportunities to increase issue awareness, engage supporters and raise funds. Official charitable partners are selected based on established criteria to further the goals of the event and support the local community. Through a careful selection process, partner status is awarded to organizations that best address a community need, demonstrate effective impact on the community and provide a creative plan to get involved with the One City Marathon. Partnerships are for one year and are not a guarantee for future events as the marathon will strive to partner with new organizations each year. There is not a pre-determined number of selections each year.

The charitable partners will benefit from funds raised through a runner pledge campaign, direct online contributions and affiliated activities created by the organizations themselves. Additionally, a portion of the race proceeds will be evenly distributed to partners after the race. In order to be considered as a charitable partner, organizations must be a registered 501(c)(3) non-profit operating for at least one year prior to the race and commit to a minimum of four runners, excluding the Nautical Mile, and twenty volunteers required for the event weekend. Preference will be given to organizations located in Newport News and those that serve Newport News residents. Partnership applications for the 2017 event are due by close of business on Friday, May 27th and can found on the One City Marathon website.
