Hints for Halloween

Posted on October 24, 2017 at 9:52 AM by Communications Department

Have fun and be safe!

Fall is here and with that comes the smell of pumpkin spice and the anticipation of Halloween. On Tuesday, October 31, trick-or-treating  starts at dusk and all trick-or-treat activities must end by 8:00 p.m. on Newport News. Residents are reminded that trick-or-treat activities are for children 12 years of age and younger, and masks of any type may not be worn by adults accompanying them.

10-24 halloweenWhether your family chooses to attend a community event, classroom party, or participate in neighborhood trick-or-treating, it is important to keep little ghouls, goblins and super-heroes safe. The National Safety Council recommends the following tips to ensure a fun evening.
  • All costumes, wigs and accessories should be fire resistant.
  • Add reflective tape to costumes and bags as they become more visible after dark.
  • Attach an emergency contact number to the child or costume for First Responders to use in case they are separated from the group or adults.
  • Motorists need to watch for children walking on roadways, medians and curbs and enter and exit driveways and alleys carefully.
  • Children should trick or treat in familiar, well-lit areas with other children and not walk alone.

If you can’t participate on Halloween evening, there are activities throughout the week for children of any age to enjoy. Visit the Newport News Library or Parks Recreation & Tourism websites to find more information.
