The Fire Education Office is currently conducting our annual safety

and fire education (S.A.F.E.) House program at Newport News City Park now through mid-May. This is a partnership with Newport News Public schools to educate our smallest citizens in fire and life safety skills. Students are taught to identify and recognize a smoke detector and the sound that it makes. They learn firsthand through the use of theatrical smoke how to “Stay Low and Go” to crawl as they escape from a burning house and establish a designated meeting place outside.
The students also learn what to do if their clothes catch fire in the “Stop, Drop and Roll” training lesson that is covered in the course. These lessons help educate and train thousands of students in our Newport News Public schools system. It gives them an outstanding foundation in remaining healthy and safe throughout their entire lives.
