Newport News Tourism Hosts City Familiarization Tour

Attend to become a certified Newport News Hospitality Ambassador

10-5 lee hallNewport News Tourism is conducting a day-long familiarization (FAM) tour on October 17. The tour is for anyone who interacts with the public, such as visitor center employees, restaurant wait staff, hotel personnel and other hospitality industry workers. It’s designed to be a fast-paced but comprehensive overview that provides participants with first-hand knowledge of all attractions in Newport News.

The day starts at 8:15 a.m. with tours of the Peninsula Fine Arts Center, The Mariners’ Museum and Ferguson Center for the Arts. Rolling tours take participants past Port Warwick and Tradition Brewing Co. in City Center at Oyster Point, followed by a tour and lunch at Virginia Living Museum.

Other points of interest include Peninsula SPCA & Petting Zoo, Causey’s Mill, Historic Hilton Village, Huntington Beach, Fort Fun, Virginia War Museum, Newport News Shipyard, Victory Arch, Ironclad Distillery, James A. Fields House, the Newsome House Museum & Cultural Center, and Downing-Gross Cultural Arts Center. 

Guests then head up to Newport News Park and visit the new Campsite Office and the Newport News Visitor Center, where dessert will be served. The tour concludes with visits to Lee Hall Mansion, Endview Plantation and windshield tours of the U.S. Army Transportation Museum at Fort Eustis, Lee’s Mill, Historic Warwick Courthouse, and Young’s Mill. At the end, guests are encouraged to take the Newport News Hospitality Ambassador test to become a certified Newport News Hospitality Ambassador.

The cost to participate is $15 per person and includes lunch and transportation. Those interested in the tour must register no later than October 12 by calling 757- 886-7777 to request a registration form. Forms can be filled out and faxed to 757-886-7920. Checks, also due by October 12 unless another arrangement has been made, should be made payable to the City of Newport News and mailed to Janie Tross, Newport News Visitor Center, 13560 Jefferson Ave., Newport News, VA 23603.
