The Newport News Department of Parks, Recreation and Tourism recently collaborated with the Department of Public Works to install a new landscaped planting bed in the median of Victory Boulevard around one of the city’s gateway signs. Public works coordinated efforts along with the Department of Engineering to provide advanced traffic control setup for an inside lane closure along the busy, 45 mph, corridor so that work could be safely performed.
Plants were selected to keep site visibility clear while providing seasonal interest. The area now includes 52 spring blooming low, evergreen shrubs, 150 summer blooming perennials, and 43 fall pluming native grasses to round out a lower maintenance, drought tolerant landscape. In addition, some heavy pruning and mulching work is being performed to tidy up nearby mature hollies. Later this fall, early spring blooming narcissus will also be planted within the perennial area, yielding even more blooming bang.
