Downing-Gross Cultural Arts Center is offering two free classes for youth interested in music and photography. Starting next month, youth ages 8 and up can learn to play the steel drum in classes taught by the Mosaic Steel Orchestra. Students will become members of the Mosaic Junior Steel Drum Ensemble and perform around Hampton Roads. Classes, sponsored by the Newport News Arts Commission, are held Mondays at 4 p.m. and end at 7 p.m.

Youth ages 10 to 18, who are interested in photography can attend classes on Saturdays from 10 a.m. until 2 p.m. with Point, Aim, Shoot studios. The classes teach youth how to use professional photography equipment, common photography terms and techniques, and how to successfully market their photos. Youth can also attend special events as the featured media crew and participate in the production of documentary features.
Those interested in participating in either of the courses should visit Downing-Gross Cultural Arts Center to register onsite. To learn more, visit
