The Wickham
Avenue Alliance has completed its 11th successful summer offering programs and
learning opportunities for community youth. The Youth Leadership Program
provides opportunities for youth in middle school or high school to give back
to the community and learn valuable workplace skills while earning a weekly
stipend. Promoting service learning, the leadership program had 20 youth from
the Southeast Community as participants.

During the
summer, youth leaders engaged in educational programs such as a resume building
workshop, an online career searching class, and a money management workshop
presented by Bayport Credit Union. Youth leaders also attended a Career
Exploration Expo, where they were able to interview business professionals
across different career paths and learn what it takes to follow in these
leaders footsteps. In addition to the many programs attended, youth leaders
volunteered their time each week at local organizations over the course of
eight weeks. In total, participants provided 2,863 volunteer hours among the
five community sites including the C. Waldo Scott Center, Doris Miller
Community Center, Downing-Gross Cultural Arts Center, Pearl Bailey Library and
the Boys and Girls Club of the Virginia Peninsula – Greater Hampton Roads Unit.
