Posted on September 15, 2017 at 11:38 AM by Communications Department

Newport News is celebrating the 40th anniversary of Grissom Library, which opened September 18, 1977 and was originally just known as the Denbigh branch of the Newport News Public Library. Then-City Councilman Fred Christie submitted a resolution to name the library in honor of the Newport News resident Virgil I. “Gus” Grissom when he became the second American astronaut to enter space on July 21, 1961.

Grissom was one of the Mercury 7 astronauts who trained at NASA Langley. Earlier this summer, Daily Press authors released a book titled “The Unknown and Impossible” to help commemorate the centennial of NASA Langley. In celebration of 40th anniversary of Grissom Library, Daily Press authors are presenting a book discussion from 2 p.m. to 4 p.m. tomorrow at the library. The talk will detail the facility’s broad influence on aviation and on the U.S. space program.

On Monday, September 18 continue to celebrate the 40th anniversary as library staff will serve cake throughout the day. Grissom is open Monday from 10 a.m. to 9 p.m. To learn more about the events along with the many resources offered at Grissom, visit the Newport News Public Library System website.
