The Third Annual Mariners’ Gallery Crawl: The Secret Life of Objects

Posted on August 30, 2017 at 10:34 AM by Communications Department

Behind many objects housed in museums are hidden stories just waiting to be told. The Mariners' Museum is holding their third annual Gallery Crawl Saturday, September 16 from 6:30 – 10:30 p.m. Guests can hear about unexpected and sometimes odd discoveries made by collection experts as they sip, savor and explore the crawl

Why is there a mysterious lock of hair found behind the miniature portrait of Matthew Fontaine Maury, father of modern oceanography. Who painted the second painting hidden behind the original of the U.S. survey steamer, Walker, by William A. K. Martin? Guests experience these rare artifacts up-close and hear the sometimes scandalous secrets from another time while exploring the nooks and crannies of the museum.

Each ticket is a passport that transports attendees through the museum with a variety of appetizing foods, alcoholic, and non-alcoholic beverages. Sponsorship and tickets are available now. All proceeds from this fundraising event support the work of The Mariners’ Museum and Park and help provide engaging experiences to all visitors.  The proceeds also enable the museum to provide free admission to school children in grades K-12 during field trips.

Tickets are $65 and can be purchased online. Tickets for museum members are $55. For information about tickets and sponsorship, please call 757-591-7706. The Mariners’ Museum is located at 100 Museum Drive in  Newport News.
