The Wreck of the Old 97

Join the Lee Hall Train Station Foundation at the 1884 Courthouse on Wednesday, September 6, at 7:00 p.m. as Danville Historian and author of The Wreck of the Old 97 Larry G. Aaron discusses his book. The Wreck of the Old 97 delves into the infamous disaster of a Southern Railway mail train trying to make up lost time by exceeding the speed limit. On a sharp downhill curve just before Danville, Virginia, the train could not be slowed. The engineer blasted the whistle in warning as the runaway locomotive left the trestle and plunged into a ravine, killing nine people.  8-29 train

Immortalized in song, poetry and folklore, the tragedy of September 7, 1903 remains a haunting episode in America's railroad history. Aaron's presentation includes narrative, music, film clips, historic photos and a display of artifacts from train crew members.  Copies of his book are available for purchase and autograph.

The lecture is free and open to the public and takes place on the second floor of the 1884 Warwick Courthouse, 14421 Old Courthouse Way. For additional information call 757-525-7372.
