Newport News Public Schools Welcomes Students Back to School

Posted on August 28, 2017 at 10:04 AM by Communications Department

On Tuesday, September 5, Newport News Public Schools (NNPS) welcomes more than 27,500 students back to school. This new beginning brings the excitement of many possibilities for NNPS students and staff as they work together to ensure that students are college, career, and citizen-ready.

Students entering sixth-grade and ninth-grade are encouraged to attend orientation at their new school. Students may take a tour of the school, meet administrators and teachers, learn the schedule, meet classmates, and discover what clubs and activities are available. All early childhood centers, elementary schools and middle schools are holding open houses. Parents and students can meet teachers and principals, and get acquainted with the school’s learning environment. Contact the school for more information.

This app allows families to view the real-time location of their child’s school bus on a smartphone, tablet or computer for free. See the location of your child’s bus both before and after school; confirm that your child’s bus has arrived at the bus stop, at school or both; and receive a “push notification” or email message when the bus is a certain distance from the bus stop. Available in English, Spanish and French, the Here Comes the Bus app can be downloaded for free from the App Store or Google Play. To sign up, visit and enter account number 74046 and your student’s NNPS ID.
