Animal Shelter Has Record Adoptions During National Campaign

Posted on August 23, 2017 at 9:58 AM by Communications Department

Clear the ShelterThe Peninsula Regional Animal Shelter participated in the Clear the Shelters national campaign which kicked off July 18 and culminated with Clear the Shelters Day held on Saturday, August 19. During the shelter’s month long campaign there were 221 adoptions and on the day of the national event there were 29 adoptions, a one day adoption record for the shelter! Altogether, a total of 250 animals at the shelter were connected with their forever homes over the course of the campaign.

Although Clear the Shelters was a huge success and brought additional publicity to the shelter, there are still many animals available for adoption! Come out to the shelter today to find a new furry family member! Adoption hours are:

Monday - Thursday: 12 p.m. - 5 p.m.
(The shelter will be closed for adoptions on Tuesdays beginning September 5 for staff training.)
Friday: 12 p.m. - 7 p.m.
Saturday: 11 a.m. - 5 p.m.
Sunday: 12 p.m. - 5 p.m.

The Peninsula Regional Animal Shelter is a collaborative venture supported by four separate Hampton Roads communities: Newport News, Hampton, Poquoson, and York County. This 30,000 square foot state-of-the-art facility is managed and operated by the City of Newport News on behalf of the four jurisdictions. This "open-admission" shelter contains a full service veterinary clinic and has capacity for approximately 100 dogs and 180 cats, as well as pocket pets and other small companion animals. The shelter's primary responsibilities include holding stray animals until they can be reunited with their owners, rehoming owner-surrendered pets, and facilitating pet adoptions. The shelter also houses animal control offices for the participating jurisdictions.

The shelter is open 7 days a week from 8:00 a.m. until 5:00 p.m. for owner surrenders, stray drop-offs, and owner re-claims. For additional information visit the shelter’s website.
