Space is limited for the upcoming Newport News CERT-B, Community Emergency Response Team, classes which begin September 14 and continue every Thursday through October 19. CERT training promotes a partnering effort between emergency services and the people they serve. The goal is for emergency personnel to train members of neighborhoods, community organizations, or workplaces in basic emergency skills. These members are then integrated into the emergency response capability for their area. CERT-B is for those who wish to receive the basic CERT training, but do not wish to receive further training or be activated during an emergency to help the community to recover.

The training concludes with a mock disaster environment on Saturday, October 21, where participants are challenged to organize as a team, search for victims, triage victims, rescue victims, and provide medical treatment to all victims in the simulation. These classes are free and are paid for through funding from the U.S. Department of Homeland Security. Enrollment is open to Newport News residents ages 18 and over who successfully complete a background check. The class size is also limited to 25 participants.
