Earlier this month, aircraft carrier USS George Washington arrived at its new destination, Newport News Shipbuilding, for a mid-life overhaul. Upon arrival, the Navy administration wanted the ship’s crew to take part in a volunteer opportunity, commonly known as COMRELs. In addition to helping sailors stay busy during down time, COMRELs help these men and women give back to the community they will call home for the next four years.

At the first event last week, the ship’s crew volunteered to help clean up the beachfront at King Lincoln Park. Approximately 50 sailors along with City staff, dedicated their time and services to pick up litter and debris along the park’s shoreline. In total, the team collected over 100 bags of trash. There are plans for the crew members to continue working with the City on a series of volunteer projects to help beautify Newport News.
