Donations Still Being Accepted
Councilwoman Saundra Cherry in partnership with Downtown Newport News Merchants and Neighbors Association Inc. and the James A. Fields House Inc. is helping prepare students for the new school year with the 3rd Annual Back to School Community Fest. On Saturday, August 26 from 1 p.m. to 3 p.m. at James A. Fields House, youth who live in Newport News can receive free backpacks and school supplies.

The festival not only provides free materials, but aims to motivate youth to succeed academically in the upcoming school year. Youth can enjoy cotton candy, food, rides, drawings, games, a mobile playground from the Newport News Police Department, and more. In order to receive a backpack, children must be present and accompanied by a parent. No registration is required to attend.
Organizations interested in making school supply donations can contact the Downtown Newport News Merchants and Neighbors Association at 757-813-6014. This year’s goal is to serve 675 children. Last year, items were donated from local businesses and organizations such as Thomas Nelson Community College, Anthem Blue Cross Blue Shield, Huntington Ingalls, J & J mobile, and more to help 650 children.
