Newport News Park Hosts Variety of Free Events

Looking for fun things to do during the last month of summer vacation? Newport News Park is the place to go! With a variety of free programs, there is something exciting for all ages.

Every Friday now through Labor Day weekend check out Friday Night Adventures. Meet a park naturalist to discover facts about some of the park’s natural and historical features. The program includes nature walks, video presentations and/or hands-on activities. Topics include beavers, snakes, owls, bats and other creatures inhabiting the park. Call 886-7916 for weekly topic description and location.

Pre-school children and their caregivers can enjoy Story and a Walk every second Wednesday of the month at 10:00 a.m. as park staff members share a story at the Newport News Park Discovery Center then take everyone on a short walk around the park.

Every Saturday now through Labor Day Weekend at 11 a.m. is Discovery Hour at the park. Discover special facts about the wildlife living in this area, find fun activities in the parks, and meet new friends while learning about the natural environment in Newport News. Most programs begin at the Discovery Center, and may include crafts, games or nature walks for the whole family. Call 886-7916 for topic information.

On the first and third Sunday of the month at 7:00 a.m., join the Hampton Roads Bird Club in parking lot 1 for Bird Walks. Take a stroll through the park and see what interesting species of birds live right here in Newport News. Beginners are welcome and binoculars are recommended.

Citizens can also learn more about the art of archery in the park at a free Archery Safety Lesson. Join as a Park Ranger gives a one hour presentation on general archery safety tips and discusses rules and regulations specific to Newport News Park.
