The Newport News Sheriff’s Office is once again warning residents about a jury duty scam that was first reported earlier this year. Recently, a Newport News woman received a call informing her that she missed jury duty and requested her

to pay $900 in fines to avoid being arrested. The caller, who used a number that shows up in Caller ID as Newport News Sheriff’s Office, told the woman to send money using a “green dot” prepaid credit card.
The Sheriff’s Office reminds residents of the following
• No one from the Newport News Sheriff’s Office will ever call to threaten arrest or demand money for missing jury duty.
• All communication about jury duty is done through the mail.
• Report phone calls received like this to the authorities by calling 757- 926-8535.
• Never send money or give out personal information during unsolicited phone calls.
