Washington Avenue between 39th and 41st Street will be closed to all traffic from 6 a.m. on Saturday, July 29 until 5 a.m. Monday, July 31. Contractors are shifting the traffic pattern for the last phase of the Washington Avenue Bridge Superstructure Replacement project. Performing a detour during the weekend allows the lane shift to be accomplished with the least disruption to Newport News Shipbuilding employees and the public.
Following the weekend detour, the new traffic pattern maintains two lanes of two-way traffic (one lane northbound and one lane southbound) on

Washington Avenue and the lanes are shifting from the East side where they are presently to the West side of the bridge. In addition, the pedestrian route is shifting to the West to allow the completion of the sidewalk and curb. This $2.3 million project is 90 percent finished and on schedule for completion this Fall.
