Hiring process open now through August 18
The Newport News Fire Department (NNFD)

application period for the next hiring process is now open until August 18. NNFD is comprised of dual-role personnel Firefighter/Medics who rotate their emergency response duties between ambulance and fire apparatus. Due to their dual-role responsibilities, Firefighter/Medic recruits are required to successfully graduate from two separate structured recruit training programs – the Tidewater Regional Fire Academy and the college-level Emergency Medical Services course.

After a roughly six month hiring process that includes a written test, a physical abilities test and interviews, the recruit training program begins after the new year. Recruits are hired as full time City of Newport News employees prior to that start of the recruit training program. At a glance, employment with the City of Newport News Fire Department offers:
