Posted on July 24, 2017 at 8:31 AM by Communications Department

Hiring process open now through August 18

The Newport News Fire Department (NNFD) NNFD 1_SCapplication period for the next hiring process is now open until August 18. NNFD is comprised of dual-role personnel Firefighter/Medics who rotate their emergency response duties between ambulance and fire apparatus. Due to their dual-role responsibilities, Firefighter/Medic recruits are required to successfully graduate from two separate structured recruit training programs – the Tidewater Regional Fire Academy and the college-level Emergency Medical Services course.
After a roughly six month hiring process that includes a written test, a physical abilities test and interviews, the recruit training program begins after the new year. Recruits are hired as full time City of Newport News employees prior to that start of the recruit training program. At a glance, employment with the City of Newport News Fire Department offers:
• $38,325 base salary with a $1,000 increase at 6 & 12 months
• 25 year retirement program
• Health, dental & vision insurance
• Life insurance for you & family
• Paid vacation & sick leave
• Tuition reimbursement
• Reimbursable gym memberships
• Career advancement opportunities

Upon completion of Fire and EMS programs, Firefighter/Medics average ten working days per month. Find more information about the hiring process including requirements at the Firefighter/Medic Recruitment website.
