Newport News Seafood Industrial Park

Posted on April 27, 2016 at 11:04 AM by Communications Department

Industrial Gem of the Southeast Community

For over a century, the Seafood Industrial Park (SIP) along Jefferson and Terminal Avenue at the southern end of Newport News has provided waterfront access to commercial maritime businesses. This City-owned industrial park has consistently produced revenue for the City and job opportunities for citizens. The SIP provides commercial fishermen a location to unload their catches from both the Chesapeake Bay and the Atlantic Ocean, while also offering service and supply opportunities for the maritime industry.

Almost 1,000 jobs are associated with the 39-acre industrial park. Nearly $1 million in rent and mooring fees are collected every year, and thousands more are collected annually in taxes from the park’s businesses. Millions of dollars’ worth of high protein, low fat seafood products are landed annually at the park, and the SIP accounts for over half of the dollar value of all seafood landed in the port of Hampton Roads.

Managed by the City’s Department of Development, the SIP is well known among mariners along the east coast for its proximity to the open sea and safe mooring during storms. Although filled to capacity, refurbishments and modifications are planned to further improve and fortify this economic engine for the City and the region.
