Recently, the City of Newport News and Newport News Public Schools received the Governor’s Clean Fleet Award. Secretary of Transportation Aubrey Lane presented the award during the Virginia Natural Gas From Sea-to-Shining-Sea Natural Gas Vehicle Road Rally Clean Fleet award_SCAcross America stop in Newport News. The award recognizes governments and fleets that have excelled in the adoption of alternative fuels including natural gas, propane and others, thereby reducing greenhouse gas emissions and petroleum use. Together, the city and the School Division have 76 alternative fuel vehicles that run on propane autogas. This includes 24 school buses and 52 vehicles used by city departments such as Fire, Parks, Recreation & Tourism, Police, and Public Works, as well as the Sheriff’s Office.

Sponsored by Virginia Clean Cities and the Department of Mines, Minerals and Energy, the event was held at the Virginia Natural Gas fueling site located at 746 Diligence Drive. Virginia Natural Gas used the event to promote the use of natural gas as an alternative transportation fuel.
