Last month, the Street Maintenance Division

of the City’s Department of Public Works completed some much needed repairs at the Denbigh Boat Ramp. Crews cut out a 45’ x 60’ section of the launch area that was in poor condition and repaved it with 100 tons of asphalt. The job took two days to complete. The ramp was closed during construction, but the pier remained open for anglers.
The Denbigh Boat Ramp is located at the end of Denbigh Boulevard and provides access to the Warwick River, a tributary of the James River, for saltwater fishing. Operated by the Department of Parks, Recreation and Tourism, Denbigh Boat Ramp’s quiet, residential atmosphere makes it a prime

attraction for thousands of visitors annually. This 13 acre park is open daily from sunrise to 10 p.m., and there are no usage fees for the trails, fishing pier, or boat ramp. Newport News has two other public boat ramps for saltwater fishing – Huntington Park on Mercury Boulevard at the foot of the James River Bridge provides access to the James River, and Peterson’s Yacht Basin at 16th Street and Oak Avenue provides access to the Hampton Roads Harbor. Boat ramps at both Huntington Park and Peterson’s Yacht Basin are open 24 hours a day.
