Newport News Holds 22nd Children’s Fishing Clinic

Posted on July 5, 2017 at 8:40 AM by Communications Department

Do you know of any children interested in fishing? Well, they are in luck! Register today for the 22nd Children’s Fishing Clinic at the James River Fishing Pier on July 22 from 8 a.m. to 12 p.m. This event is designed to bring children, ages 8-12, together to receive hands on education about our marine environment and learn how to fish by experienced fishermen.

Approximately 250 pre-registered children are attending, assisted by many volunteers from the community. Children interact with educational booths such as the VA Marine Resources Commission and instructional presentations. After the education portion, each child is given tackle along with a rod and reel which they get to keep.

The remainder of the morning is spent fishing with experienced anglers helping the children gain skills they can carry with them into the future. Every child also receives a t-shirt, hat and lunch. All participants must be pre-registered by July 10 by contacting Kristen Hamill at 757-926-1400 or by email at khamill@nnva.gov

The Newport News Rotary Club, Coastal Conservation Association and the Newport News Department of Parks, Recreation and Tourism sponsor the Fishing Clinic with financial assistance from the City of Newport News, Virginia Saltwater License Fund and generous donations from corporate citizens.
