In observance of Independence Day, Newport News City offices are closed on Monday, July 3 and Tuesday, July 4. This includes City Hall, City offices at City Center at Oyster Point, Newport News Waterworks' customer services offices,

the Public Works Operations Center, Newport News Public Libraries, both locations of the Treasurer's Office and Commissioner of the Revenue's Office (City Hall and Denbigh).
Garbage, recycling and bulk waste collections are taking place as usual on Monday, July 3; however, there are no collections on Tuesday, July 4, delaying solid waste pick-ups for the remainder of the week. Tuesday’s solid waste collections are being conducted on Wednesday; Wednesday's on Thursday; and Thursday’s on Friday. The Newport News Recovery Operations Center (i.e., landfill) is closed on Monday, July 3 and Tuesday, July 4.
The Peninsula Regional Animal Shelter, which serves the residents of Newport News, Hampton, Poquoson and York County, is open on Monday, July 3 and Tuesday, July 4. The shelter is open for owner surrenders, stray drop-offs, and owner re-claims from 8:00 a.m. to 5:00 p.m. and pet adoptions are available from 12 – 5 p.m. both days.
