Deer Park Elementary Receives Solar Power from Dominion

Posted on June 29, 2017 at 9:49 AM by Communications Department

Deer Park Elementary School students are now getting the opportunity to learn about the clean, renewable power of the sun thanks to Dominion Energy's Solar for Students program. Students can now engage in hands-on learning via a solar array installed right outside the school.

Dominion is providing a 1.2-kilowatt photovoltaic system, a power system designed to supply usable solar power, as well as technical support, educational materials and training for educators. Each solar array displays real-time data on the amount of electricity generated and produces enough electricity at maximum output to power 18 desktop computers, 40 ten-gallon aquariums or 15 42-inch LED televisions. Students can track the generation of electric power by viewing their data online. They can also challenge other participating schools around the world to a solar power match to see who generates the most.

The installation is scheduled for completion during the 2017-18 school year. Dominion Energy Charitable Foundation is sponsoring a "Solarbration" in the fall to showcase the solar projects. The event gives students, local officials and community members the chance to learn more about this collaborative learning project. Two other schools from Hampton Roads received the same system, Landstown High School in Virginia Beach and Hampton High School in Hampton.
