These relationships support the mission of Sister Cities of Newport News which is to build and strengthen international cooperation, understanding and development between the citizens of the City of Newport News and those of the world. Newport News also has a Sister City relationship with Taizhou, Jiangsu, China and Friendship City relationships with ZiYang, Sichuan, China and Saint-Nazaire, France.

Taxicab ordinance amended to allow discounted fares for military
City Council voted to amend the Newport News City Code to allow taxicab companies to offer discounted fares to members of the military. Taxicab fare rates are established by City Council and outlined in the City Code. The Code allowed companies to offer reduced rates of fare to elderly and handicapped passengers. This amendment, requested by taxicab drivers through the Taxi Advisory Board, goes into effect July 1, 2017.

One City Marathon management to transition to a nonprofit
At its afternoon work session yesterday, City Council was briefed on and agreed with a proposal to move the Newport News One City Marathon from being managed by the City to being managed by a nonprofit organization. Through the International City/County Management Association, a team of local government professionals from across the country looked at the current city-run model, identified and analyzed other models for running similar large events and recommended that Newport News transition to a nonprofit model over a two year transition period. The nonprofit would plan this signature event every year while maintaining the marathon’s goals of promoting community pride and unity, encouraging healthy lifestyles and gaining greater exposure for Newport News. The 2018 One City Marathon Weekend takes place March 2-4, 2018.
