Recently, the Department of Public Works

participated in Career Days at several elementary schools in Newport News. At Deer Park Elementary, Lee Hall Elementary, and R. O. Nelson Elementary schools students were brought outside to view equipment, see the machines in operation, and talk to the operators about their jobs. Students got exposure to a Solid Waste knuckleboom truck, a Street Maintenance frontend loader and street sweeper, Stormwater and Wastewater vacuum trucks and a Wastewater TV truck. The students enjoyed seeing the equipment and asking many questions.
At Yates Elementary School,

students from each grade were brought into the auditorium separately to talk to the presenters. Students were able to ask questions and chat with employees from Security Services, Wastewater FOG (Fats, Oils and Grease), Stormwater Vector Control as well as the Department’s Personnel Coordinator.
