A record number of people (795, to be exact) entered the Newport News Tourism Awareness Contest, held May 7-23, in celebration of National Travel and Tourism Week.

The 2017 contest put a spotlight on the variety of entertainment and performing arts venues available in the city, while also paying tribute to Newport News native Ella Fitzgerald who would have celebrated her 100th birthday in April. Called “Where in the World Can You Find Ella in Newport News,” the contest contained photographic clues that matched up to eight locations in Newport News where performances are held. To enter, contestants were asked to match the correct clue number to the corresponding Newport News location.
All correct entry forms were entered into a drawing to select the winners of six prize packages, which ranged in value from the $367.00 “Prelude” to the $1,106.00 “Encore.” The packages were filled with donated gift certificates for dining, shopping, lodging, and other fun things to do in Newport News.
Winners were notified by phone last week and included:
PRELUDE: MaRhonda Echols of Hampton
ACT I: Sonia Hale of Mathews
INTERMISSION: Jason Reeves of Newport News
ACT II: Todd Filer of Newport News
FINALE: Dan Given of Newport News
