Posted on June 1, 2017 at 8:45 AM by Communications Department

Annual event is Saturday, June 3

On the first Saturday of June for the last 29 years, thousands of Virginians simultaneously descend on the rivers, streams, and beaches of the Chesapeake Bay watershed to remove harmful litter and debris.cleanup volunteers_SC This Clean the Bay Day tradition, is an opportunity for families, businesses, clubs, civic or church groups to give back to local waterways. This year’s event takes place Saturday, June 3 from 9 a.m. to 12 noon.

The volunteers in Newport News will clean two areas: the Monitor Merrimac overlook located on 16th Street and Chesapeake Avenue, and Huntington Park. All cleaning supplies are being provided. Groups, organizations, or individuals who would like to volunteer should contact Darrell Baskin at dbaskin@nnva.gov. Walk up volunteers are also welcome.

Since 1989, Clean the Bay Day has engaged over 146,000 volunteers, who have removed approximately 6.4 million pounds of debris from nearly 6,900 miles of shoreline in Virginia! The annual event helps tackle the major unseen threats to the Bay watershed, like habitat loss, sediment and nutrient pollution, require broad and focused support.
