Over Dimensional Permit

A permit is required for any over-sized and/or overweight vehicle to travel over city roadways. These permits are often referred to as “hauling” permits. For the specific dimensions/axle weights that necessitate a permit, please refer to the city’s Over Dimensional Moving and Hauling Policy Manual or Chapter 26, Article V – Permit for Operation of Oversize or Overweight Vehicles or Moving Houses in the Newport News Code of Ordinances.

Requirements

All permit application submissions must include proof of liability insurance for the vehicles specified in the vehicle details section of the application. Applications for single trip and superload single trip permits must have a completed and signed Certification of Clearance form attached. Not providing all the required information or documentation can cause significant delays in permit issuance. Review time

Permit applications are processed as quickly as possible; however, due to factors such as, volume of application submissions, incomplete applications, incorrect information, etc. review can multiple days. Per the city’s Over Dimensional Moving and Hauling Policy Manual the following review times are possible:

  • Single Trip - 3 business days.
  • Superload Single Trip – 7 business days.
  • General Blanket – 5 business days.
  • Superload Blanket – 7 business days.

Additional review time may be required depending on the complexity of the move, the number of vehicles and/or other factors known or unknown to the city.

Fees (nonrefundable)

Permit fees vary based on the permit type, length of validity and if more than one (1) vehicle will be included on a single permit (fleets). For current fee information refer to the city’s Over Dimensional Moving and Hauling Policy Manual.
