Outdoor Dining Permit

A permit is required for outdoor dining areas which are defined as an area on a public sidewalk or other right-of-way area where patrons may consume food and/or beverages sold by the immediately adjacent food services establishment. The establishment may propose table service in the outdoor dining area or sell take-out items to be consumed in the outdoor dining area. An outdoor dining permit expires annually and must be renewed if the applicant intends to continue to place items in the sidewalk area. Proof of insurance must be kept current and on file in the Office of the City Attorney. For all standards and guidelines refer to Chapter 38 – Streets and Sidewalks in the Newport News Code of Ordinances.  Outdoor Dining permit applications are submitted online. If you have any questions regarding the application process, please contact the permit office at permits@nnva.gov or call 757-933-2311.
