Garbage, Bulk Waste and RecyclingGarbage is collected at curbside once each week from single family homes. For those residents served by the 18-gallon bin recycling program, collection is weekly. For those served by the 64-gallon cart recycling program, collection is every other week. Bulk waste is generally collected on the same week and day of the 64-gallon cart recycling collection. To inquire about your collection day, please call 757-933-2311.
Most townhouses, condominiums and mobile homes that pay a solid waste fee also receive weekly collection of recyclables. Drop-off recycling is available to those that are not accessible for curbside collection. If you need information on collection days for your neighborhood, call 757-933-2311.
Delays in CollectionCollection of garbage, bulk wastes and recyclables may be delayed from time to time due to holidays, equipment problems, or seasonal high waste volumes. In these instances, collection will usually take place within the next one to two working days.
During emergencies and natural disasters, collections may be delayed or temporarily cancelled. This information will be posted on the city's Cable Channel 48.
A Request for KindnessRemember solid waste is collected by people, not just trucks. Glass can shatter and cut, medical waste can transmit diseases, and chemicals can burn or blind. Please adopt safe practices and observe the rules as defined in each category. You will continue to receive the best service the Solid Waste Division can provide and our front line professionals will remain safe.
Eligibility for ServiceGarbage, bulk waste, and recycling service are provided to occupied single family households that pay a Residential Solid Waste Fee. Fees are charged on the resident's water bill. Collections cease 30 days after an account has been terminated or a property has become vacant.
Backyard Collection for the Physically DisabledResidents who are temporarily or permanently disabled are eligible to receive backyard garbage and recycling collection, if no other able bodied person resides in the household.
To receive an application for backyard collection, call 757-933-2311 and an application will be mailed to you, or you may download an application (PDF). A physician's certificate is required as a part of the application process.
