/2837The purpose of the Department of Engineering is to provide professional engineering services for the City of Newport News. Engineering is comprised of the following areas:

- Permits Office (Permits are now processed by Development Services a division of the Department of Planning)

Responsibilities
- Implementation of design, construction, contractual award, construction inspection, project management and monitoring of public projects
- Management of the city Geographic Information System (GIS)
- Administration of city initiatives to bring compliance in the city right-of-way with the Americans with Disabilities Act (ADA)
- Architectural Inspection of new construction and renovation of city facilities
- Administration of the city traffic programs, including traffic signs, traffic signals, pavement markings and streetlights
- Analysis and implementation of traffic-related improvements, transportation planning and roadway projects in coordination with the Virginia Department of Transportation (VDOT), the Department of Motor Vehicles (DMV) and Hampton Roads Planning District Commission (HRPDC)
- Engineering services associated with the city Sewage Collection System Management Program (SECOMP)
- Engineering services related to the city Stormwater Management (SWM) Program, complying with federal, state and local mandates
- Engineering studies affecting the safety, health and welfare of citizens and visitors
- Maintain an internet site to display departmental services, points of contact and geographic information for public access
- Maintain the department's Environmental Management System (EMS) Program
- Serves as the staff liaison on the city's Wetland Board
- Technical support for environmental initiatives including the city's Lake Enhancement and Flood Assistance program
