Natural hazards and emergencies of various types, size, intensity and duration may occur with little warning in the City of Newport News. These disasters can affect the safety, health and welfare of the population, and cause damage or destruction to private and public property. Based on historical data and geographic features of this region, the primary natural hazards in Newport News include the following:
