Responsibilities
The Newport News Police Department is committed to keeping the Community informed. This office is responsible for maintaining a relationship with all media agencies, which allows us to keep the community abreast of the Department's activities. In addition to preparing news releases about significant events involving the Department, this office answers media and public inquiries on a daily basis, and it develops and monitors social media content across a variety of platforms.
The Public Information Office also coordinates the Department's participation in the Crime Line program. This program offers a means for the community to anonymously provide important information about unsolved cases, wanted persons, illegal activities and the location of stolen property, etc. Tipsters are eligible for a cash reward if the information leads to an arrest. This program receives no department or city funds and is funded entirely through donations. Anyone who desires to provide a tip to Crime Line should call 1-888-LOCK-U-UP.
The Public Information Office is also responsible for internal communications, including the Department's newsletter, and the planning of ceremonies and special events.
