Become an Election Official

Are you interested in serving as an Election Official in Newport News? Their duties include:

  • Arrive at the polling place at 5 AM on Election Day and remain until all tallies have been completed
  • Process voters by checking names on list of registered voters
  • Set up voting equipment and prepare the polling place for voting
  • Tally results, secure voting machines and close the polling place

To qualify becoming an election official, you must:

  • be a registered voter in the Commonwealth,
  • be able to take direction, pay attention to detail and not be easily distracted,
  • be able to work the entire day on Election Day,
  • enjoy meeting people and serving the public and
  • cannot hold elected office or be the employee of an elected official.

Election officials also get paid for their time and service!

  • Chief Officer: $190 plus $20 for training
  • Assistant Officer: $150 plus $20 for training
  • Officer: $120
