Criminal Intelligence Unit

The mission of the Newport News Police Department (NNPD) Criminal Intelligence Unit (CIU) is to collect, collate, evaluate, analyze and disseminate criminal intelligence information for law enforcement, in an effort to protect the community and suppress criminal activity, while ensuring the preservation of an individual's constitutional rights.

The CIU is used to support ongoing NNPD criminal investigations and to help identify suspect(s) involved in criminal activity, in collaboration with our federal, state, and local partners.  The CIU analyzes information including, but not limited to, organized crime, drug trafficking, money laundering, gambling, prostitution, sex offenders and predators, criminal gangs, hate groups, terrorist groups - domestic and abroad, civil disorders and public corruption, resulting in the development of actionable criminal intelligence.

The CIU is currently comprised of certified Criminal Intelligence Analysts who work towards gaining an understanding of who is doing what, with whom, by their focus on the relationship between person and organizations involved in illegal and usually conspiratorial activities.  The information is disseminated to detectives within the CIU, and their supervisor to further ongoing investigations.  An additional detective is assigned to the FBI-Joint Terrorism Task Force (JTTF).  The CIU also houses the department's Asset Forfeiture function, as well as Digital Forensics.
